Scene – Monster Movie Set – Inside
Condition: Putt-Putt and Pep enter the Monster Movie Set for the first time.
Putt-Putt and Pep find themselves on the busy street of what appears to be a major metropolitan city.
putt-PUTT
Where are we, Pep?
Pep
Arf!
Just then, the ground begins to shake.
PUTT-PUTT
Whoa!
A car in the street “points” up in the air and yells ...
CAR
CARZILLA!
Peering over the skyscrapers we see CARZILLA, a giant mechanical monster made from spare auto parts.
CARZILLA
GRAHHHHHHHH!!!
CAR
Yaaaaaa!
All the cars in the street scatter in panic, as Carzilla stomps his way through the city.
putt-putt
(to Carzilla)
Hey! What’s the big idea?!
Carzilla stops in his tracks.
carzilla
Guh?
putt-putt
We’re not going to let you scare all these poor people. C’mon Pep!
Putt-Putt starts haplessly ramming Carzilla’s gigantic foot. Carzillla doesn’t even feel it.
putt-putt
Ya big bully!
OFF SCREEN we hear the voice of famed German film director JOSEF VON STEERINGWHEEL.
von steeringwheel
Cut, cut, CUT!
We see now that’s it’s only a movie set. The skyscrapers, which looked so tall a moment ago, are really only a few feet high and made of wood. We also see Josef Von Steeringwheel, a regal looking antique German car who wears a monocle over one “eye”.
von steeringwheel
Vot is dis? Dis is not in mein script! Who is der little guy?
PUTT-PUTT
My name’s Putt-Putt, and this is Pep!
Pep
Arf-arf!
Putt-putt
…and who are you?
von steeringwheel
(astonished)
Who am I? Who AM I?!
Von Steeringwheel pauses for a moment. He’s forgotten who he is. His assistant, a jeep named CLUTCH KEYGRIP, leans over and whispers in his ear.
von steeringwheel
I, am Josef Von Steeringwheel, der world’s greatest director! I am making my latest masterpiece, “Carzilla”. It is about a very naughty car-monster who goes around smashing and destroying everything he sees! Smashing and destroying! Smash! Destroy! Smash!
Clutch Keygrip puts his arm around Von Steeringwheel to calm him down.
clutch
Shhhh, shhhhhh. There, there.
(to Putt-Putt)
He’s very easily excited. I’m Clutch Keygrip, Mr. Von Steeringwheel’s assistant.
putt-putt
Pleased to meet you!
von steeringwheel
Enough of dis chitty-chatty. We must finish der movie!
clutch
There’s a problem sir. We ran out of film.
Von Steeringwheel’s lights flash and his windshield wipers turn on.
von steeringwheel
Vot?! No film?! Ack! We are ruined!
putt-putt
Wait! I could get some film for you.
von steeringwheel
Poot-Poot! You are a genius!
clutch
You’d be really helping us out, kid. Thanks!
Putt-putt
No problem!

Are you O.K. Mr. Von Steeringwheel?
von steeringwheel
Oh yes, Poot-Poot. I just want to finish my film! Plus, I’m a few thousand miles overdue for an oil change ...

putt-putt
So what does a director do anyway, Mr. Von Steeringwheel?
von steeringwheel
Well, Poot-Poot, the job of a director is very important. First you must yell at the lighting person, then you have to yell at the cameraman, then you yell at the actors, and then I usually yell at Mr. Keygrip for a while. It’s a very exhausting job!
putt-putt
Boy! I’ll say!

von steeringwheel
Hello Poot-Poot!

Oh ... um ... O.K. ...
